Salatul-Jumu‘ah or Friday Prayer is offered in congregation. It is offered in place of Zuhr Prayer. Each week on Friday, Muslims are required to take a bath, dress in their best clean clothes, wear perfume and assemble in the mosque for Friday Prayer. The Holy Quran and the Hadith speak highly of the blessings of Jumu‘ah Prayer. If a Muslim spends Friday in the remembrance of God Almighty, supplicating before his Lord, he is abundantly rewarded by Allah.
The Importance of Salatul Jumu’ah (Friday Prayer)
- It is Fardh / Wajib (obligatory / mandatory) on every non-traveling, sane, adult, muslim male. It is not obligatory for females, children under puberty, travelers and those with a legitimate excuse, unless they choose to attend; if they do not attend then they should pray 4 rak’ahs for dhuhr.
- Allah (I) says in the Quran:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا نُودِىَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوْمِ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ فَٱسْعَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ (الجمعة:9)
(Oh you who believe, when the call is proclaimed for salaah the day of Friday come to the remembrance of allah and leave off business (and every other thing). That is better for you if you did but know) (Surah Al-Jumu’ah (62):9)
The Importance of Salatul Jumu’ah (Friday Prayer)
Abu-Hurayrah reported that the prophet (RA) said:
خير يوم طلعت عليه الشمس يوم الجمعة فيه خلق آدم وفيه أدخل الجنة وفيه أخرج منها ولا تقوم الساعة إلا في يوم الجمعة (رواه مسلم)
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was made to enter paradise, on it he was expelled from it. And the last hour will not take place except on Friday.” (Collected by Muslim).
How to Perform Salatul Jumu’ah (Friday Prayer)
- Time: Same time as Dhuhr prayer
- Persons: At least 3 including the imam.
- Two khutbahs: Subjects should strengthen belief in Allah and address problems faced by Muslims.
- Salaah: Two Rak’ahs recited out-loud.
- Sunnah Prayer: 4 rak’ahs in masjid or 2 rak’ahs at home.
Note: If a person comes to the Salaah after the 2 nd rak’ah, he has missed Salatul-Jumu’ah and should pray 4 Rak’ahs for Dhuhr.
Things that Should be Avoided in Jumuáh Prayer
- Speaking is not allowed during the Khutbah
- Avoid fiddling with things during the khutbah
- Avoid stepping over others shoulders in the masjid
Desirable things to do it on Friday in Islam
- Making ghusl and wearing your best clothes.
- Going early to the masjid.
- Making many Salaat Alaa-nabee.
- Reciting Surah Al-Kahf (18).
- Making dua’a during the last day hour of Friday.
Allah knows the best. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) guide all of us to His Truth and purify of our intentions, and allow us to enter Jannah together. And may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) accept all our good deeds and help us in the cause, forgive our mistakes and make us amongst the Muntaqeen & By His Mercy make us all Inhabitants of Jannah. Ameen ya rabbal’alameen.
