What is Sujood As-Sahu - The Islamic Studies

What is Sujood As-Sahw? And How To Preform?

Sujood As Shaw (Sajdah Sahw / Sujud Al Sahw) is a prostration performed in Islamic prayer (Salah/Namaz) to rectify errors or omissions that may occur during the prayer. In another definition, Sujood as Sahw is offered to make up for forgetting the number of Rakat, adding to the prayer, or omitting from the prayer.

How Sujood As-Sahw is Made?

sujood - the islamic studies

Ibn-mas’ood reported that the messenger of Allah (r) said:

إذا زاد الرجل أو نقص فليسجد سجدتين  (رواه مسلم)

(“If someone adds or decreases (something from his Salaah), he should make two Sujood.” (collected by muslim)

Note: the two sujood are made after the last tashahud, before tasleem.

When Sujood As-Sahw is Made?

If one forgets and makes any addition to his Salaah.

Example: If one was praying dhuhr (Zuhar) and stood up to pray a 5th rak’ah, then remembered. He should sit down make the last tashahud, then sujood as-sahu then tasleem.

Note: If one remembers after completing his salaah, he can still make sujood as-sahu then tasleem.

If one forgets and leaves a rukun he must return and make that rukun.

Example: if one was praying dhuhr and remembers while sitting for the last tashahud that he only made 3 rak’ahs. He should stand up and complete the 4 th rak’ah. Then after the last tashahud he should make sujood as-sahw then tasleem.

Note: if one remembers after completing his salaah. He should stand up and complete the 4th rak’ah, then after the last tashahud he should make sujood as-sahu then tasleem .

If one forgets and leaves a wajib he does not need to return and make that wajib.

Example: if one was praying dhuhr and remembers while standing in the 3rd rak’ah that he did not make the first tashahud. He does not need to return, but after the last tashahud he should make sujood as-sahw then tasleem.

Note: if one remembers before completely standing he can return and make his first tashahud, then after the last tashahud he should make sujood as-sahu then tasleem.

If one is uncertain about the number of rak’ahs he has made, he should assume the lesser amount.

Example: if one was praying dhuhr and became doubtful during the 3rd rak’ah, “is this the 3rd or 4th rak’ah.” he should assume the lesser amount (3 rak’ahs), complete his salaah. then after the last tashahud he should make sujood as-sahu then tasleem.

Note: If one is praying behind an imam and notices that the imam has forgotten something. one can remind him by saying: “subhan-allah”

Allah knows the best. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) guide all of us to His Truth and purify of our intentions, and allow us to enter Jannah together. And may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) accept all our good deeds and help us in the cause, forgive our mistakes and make us amongst the Muntaqeen & By His Mercy make us all Inhabitants of Jannah. Ameen ya rabbal’alameen.
