What is Adhan in Islam (Calls for Salah)

What is Adhan?

Adhan is a call to prayer and it is delivered five times a day by a Mua’ddin to remind Muslims to come to mandatory prayer and leave worldly matters behind.

Islamic ruling on Adhan is Fardh-kifayah (collective obligatory duty). It is sufficient if this duty is performed by some in the community. if not, then the whole community has sinned.

Merits of Adhan

Abu-Saeed Al-Khudhri said: I heard the messenger of Allah (RA) say:

لا يسمع مدى صوت المؤذن جن ولا إنس ولا شيء إلا شهد له يوم القيامة (رواه البخاري)

“No one hears the most distant voice of the mu-adhen, whether jinn, human beings or any other creation, but shall be a witness for him youmul-qiyama (the day of resurrection).” (collected by Bukhari).

Dua’a After Adhan

Jaber reported that the messenger of Allah (SWT) said:

من قال حين يسمع النداء اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة آت محمدا الوسيلة والفضيلة وابعثه مقاما محمودا الذي وعدته حلت له شفاعتي يوم القيامة

(رواه البخاري)

“Whoever says when he hears the adhan: ‘Allahumma rabba hadhi-hid da’wa tit-tam-mati wa-salaatil Qa-imati ati Mohammada nil waseelata wal fadeelata wab ‘ath-hu maqamam mahmuda nil-ladhi wa’ad-tahu.”

Meaning: Oh Allah, lord of this perfect call and established salaah. Grant Mohammed intercession (to you) and honour, and raise him to the position of praise on the day of judgement, which you promised him). He becomes eligible for my intercession on the day of Judgement.”

Annas bin-Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (SWT) said

الدعاء لا يرد بين الأذان والإقامة

Dua’a is never turned down between adhan and iqama.

(Collected by aT-Tirmidhi & Abu-Dawood)

Allah knows the best. May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) guide all of us to His Truth and purify of our intentions, and allow us to enter Jannah together. And may Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) accept all our good deeds and help us in the cause, forgive our mistakes and make us amongst the Muntaqeen & By His Mercy make us all Inhabitants of Jannah. Ameen ya rabbal’alameen.
